Located in downtown Atlanta, Georgia, the John
Hope Elementary School
is located next door to the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site.
The school was named in
honor of John Hope (1868-1936). An African-American graduate of Brown University in Rhode
Island, John Hope began his career as a professor of
classics. He spent most of his career as president of Morehouse College and, later, president of Atlanta
University.
Today, the school that
bears John Hope’s name serves a diverse population of mostly African-American
and Hispanic children.
